Defence

In 1945 the UK had almost 3 million men under arms but today we have less than 200,000. Our defence policy is based on NATO and our nuclear arsenal. This consists of British-built Vanguard-class submarines armed with Trident 11 missiles made by Lockheed Martin in the US. The missiles carry nuclear warheads made in the UK to an American design and supplied by the US Navy. Our four nuclear-powered submarines; Vanguard, Victorious, Vigilant, and Vengeance, were launched between 1992 and 1998 and are due for replacement by Dreadnought-class submarines in the 2030s.

We spend about 3% of our GDP on defence, but we are capable of bombing countries that are no threat to us, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Lybia, and Syria. We also provide troops for the current NATO manoevres in eastern Europe.

Our Tory government is still playing at Empire 66 years after the humiliation of Suez. We are threatening China over Taiwan and Russia over Ukraine. And to demonstrate our power we sent our giant aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth - known as big Lizzie - to the far east. Her sister ship The Prince of Wales has broken down so she cannot be deployed to the Black Sea.

This foolhardy sabre-rattling by the UK government may appeal to the popular press and its readership but it doesn't impress the rest of the world.

While we proudly fly the flag in foreign parts we are being invaded by Third World economic migrants and our economy is being undermined by rising energy prices resulting from our support for one side in what is essentially a Russian civil war.

A responsible government would protect our islands from invasion, secure our energy supplies, and provide the social services that we deserve. But we don't have a responsible government we have a delusional government that thinks it still rules the waves.

The Monarchy - Sam Dickson

The Queen had very little power to do anything about immigration. She constitutionally is prohibited from making any statement on the side of any issue.

Her son has brought the rage of the System Media down upon him for the twin sins of opposing modern architecture and the fast food/poison food industry.

It didn't help when he was covertly photographed when he was alone sitting on a blanket in a meadow at Balmoral reading one of those "hate books", Count Nicolas Tolstoy's "Victims of Yalta", an account of how "Ike", Truman and others deported millions of Eastern and Central Europeans to Stalin after WW11 so Stalin could murder them.

I still share my father's preference for maintaining the monarchy. As he said, even if the monarch has no power and even if the monarch fails to give leadership against the System's anti-white programs, it's worth keeping the monarchy, if for no other reason than that during her reign it was the Queen Elizabeth's picture up in the post office and not the picture of some sleazy, vote grubbing, corrupt politicians like Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Obama, Bush, Trump, Biden.

It also gives me a malicious frisson to know that no matter how successful a conniving con-artist who claws his way up to be the System's Prime Minister can be, the loathsome predator - no matter how successful - can never be #1 but must always stay in 2nd position.

The great and good Gregory Hood who is the finest writer we have is forgiven for minor transgressions.

That said, the resplendent Hood exhibits a slight trace of naivete in repeating the claim that Queen Elizabeth pressured noble Margaret Thatcher into supporting Black rule in Rhodesia.

Thatcher, like the majority of political office seekers in a universal suffrage democracy, was most likely a clinical sociopath. She had no real trace of affinity, or connection, to her race, her people, their church, their language, etc.

No, Thatcher like most of them was "looking out for number one", to use the highly instructive title the odious libertarian Robert Ringer chose for the title of his book.

We have proof of Thatcher's sociopathic immunity to the call of racial, national or religious loyalty.

At one point in her career as as a misleader in Britain Thatcher journeyed to the Soviet Union to meet with the then head kaboola of Communism, Leonid Brezhnev.

When she returned to Britain, Thatcher breathlessly related the supposedly shocking and horrifying news that at one point during their conversation, Brezhnev had mentioned that Russia and Great Britain should take cognizance of the fact that they shared so much.

Both countries were White (!!!Gasp!!!) European countries and they should keep this in mind because it showed how important it was that the two countries should cooperate in the interest of their shared race and civilization.

Thatcher could not wait to reveal this repellent remark and tell the press and everyone in Britain how shocked and disgusted she was to hear such a hateful and indeed incomprehensible  idea.

And to a clinical sociopath like Thatcher - as to Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Bush, Biden and so many in positions of misleadership in America - she probably told the truth.

To Thatcher racial, cultural and religious loyalty probably was an idea so bizzare that she was inherently incapable to getting her sociopathic mind around such a weird conception.

European Outlook: I will never forgive Margaret Thatcher for trying to stop the reunification of Germany in 1989. The Times of London reported 11 September 2009: "Two months before the fall of the Berlin Wall Margaret Thatcher told Mikhail Gorbachev that Britain did not want  German unification". Fortunately, Gorbachev was on the right side of history, the Wall came down and Germany was reunited.

Albania

Following the landing of boatloads of Albanian migrants on the Kent coast our new Home Secretary Sella Braverman warned that we are being invaded. She gives the impression that all Albanians are criminals. Some of them are but the saintly Mother Theresa of Calcutta was an Albanian who devoted her life to the service of the poor..

The Albanians are not fleeing war or famine, they are coming here simply as economic migrants. For many years Albania was unknown to most of us. Under the dictator Enver Hoxha (pictured) the country was cut off from the rest of the world, except for a long distance alliance with China. But since the fall of communism all over eastern Europe, Albania has been transformed into a market economy with membership of NATO and aspirations to join the EU.

Albanians are Europeans, closely related to their neighbours in Montenegro, Kosovo and Macedonia. Albania is a secular country that was declared the world's first athiest state by dictator Enver Hoxha in 1976. Those professing a religion are mostly Muslim. This is the result of 500 years under the Ottoman Empire when they converted to Islam. But religion and language are not biological factors. Islam is a world religion and its members can be of any race.

All this reminds me of the old days when we used to read pseudo-scientific books such as George Pile's 'Five Races of Europe'. This was full of photos of individuals who all seemed to be in the wrong places; Mediterranean types from England, Alpine types from Romania, and so on. George Pile was not a scientist, he just collected the thoughts of anthropoligists who were as political as they were scientific. One of their conclusions was that the Alpine Race were slow-witted people only fit to be labourers. In fact, the Alpine area; eastern France, southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy, has produced legions of scientists, architects, artists, writers and composers. In other words George's book is a pile of nonsense.

Race and culture are significant but obsessive racism is entirely negative. The attempt by the Nazis to subdivide Europeans into greater and lesser races led to the disaster of the Second World War.

So, don't panic. We will not be overrun by Albanians; they are not primitive savages, or terrorists, and there are only 2.8 million of them. What's more, their prime minister Edi Rama has agreed to take back any of their citizens that we don't want.

A Sense of Balance

Benito Mussolini urged us to maintain "senso di equilibrio, a sense of balance." He is portrayed as a tyrant by liberal historians but we should remember that he was a successful and popular leader until the tragedy of WW2. When Violet Gibson, an Irishwoman, shot Mussolini at point blank range in 1926 she was arrested, found to be insane and deported to the UK. One wonders what would have happened to someone who tried to assassinate Churchill at the height of his power?

Geogia Meloni has been appointed prime minister of Italy one hundred years after Benito Mussolini's March on Rome. Her Fratelli d'Italia party is a direct descendant of Partito Nazionale Fascista.

Recent events, including the death of Queen Elizabeth and the war in Ukraine, have brought conflicting messages from my readers. Some have objected to my stand on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They see it as naked aggression against an innocent nation, but I have pointed out that the Zelensky regime provoked the war by persecuting its Russian-speaking population.

Most of my political friends and contacts expressed deep sadness at the death of the Queen, but a few of them thought that it was the right time to abolish the monarchy. I am not a royalist but I admired Elizabeth Windsor and I know that the majority of Britons support the monarchy. In any case, every nation has a head of state and they all cost a fortune. We could trim down the monarchy and sell off a few of their palaces, but its probably right to maintain a tradition that acts as a unifying factor.

Having a sense of balance is not the same as sitting on the fence. There is no advantage in taking extreme positions. That's one of the things that held back the so-called far-right. Its leaders thought that they had to be more extreme than their followers, so they said and did things that sometimes made them look ridiculous.

The 'respectable' parties are just as bad. The false claims of the Brexiteers have come to haunt them as we sink into a self-inflicted recession, and the grandstanding of Priti Patel did nothng to control immigration. The British public were fed up after years of austerity and they would have supported reform of the EU; instead Boris Johnson and his gang of offshore tax-avoiders ejected us from the single market and the Rwanda plan was declared illegal.

We are facing hard times under a hard-nosed Tory government that lacks compassion. They talk about levelling up but they practice levelling down. They are encouraged by the popular press to take extreme positions, but the public expects them to govern fairly. What they need is a sense of balance.

Alexander Dugin

(Dr Alexander Dugin is labelled a racist and a nationalist by the mainstream media, but he is neither. He believes in Eurasianism; the union of the Russian Federation with the former states of the Soviet Union).

In 1991, the West was content with the collapse of the USSR and our ideological surrender, primarily by accepting the Western liberal ideology, political system and economy under Western leadership. Today, the red line for the West is the existence of a sovereign Russia, even within the borders of the Russian Federation. The AFU's counter-attack in the Kharkiv region is a direct attack by the West on Russia. Everyone knows that this
offensive was organised, prepared and equipped by the US and NATO military command and took place under their direct supervision. It is not only the use of NATO military equipment, but also the direct involvement of Western aerospace intelligence, mercenaries and instructors. In the eyes of the West, this is the beginning of 'our end'. . . . It is therefore worth coldly admitting that the West has declared war on us and is already waging it. We did not choose this war, we did not want it. Even in 1941, we did not want war with Nazi Germany and refused to believe in it until the very end. But in the current situation, when the war is waged against us de facto, this is not decisive. The only thing that matters now is to win it by defending Russia's right to be.

European Outlook # 57 March 2020

A Little Piece of History

A letter from Pat Dunigan the Lewisham branch leader of Union Movement in 1952, given to me by Adrian Davies, is a little piece of history. In those days Lewisham was a mixed working class and middle class London borough that had been heavily bombed during the war. Life was challenging; there was a desperate housing shortage and Britain was still subject to rationing. Few people owned a television set, foreign travel was almost impossible due to exchange control regulations, and credit was hard to get. Mass migration from the West Indies started in 1948 but it was not a serious problem in 1952. Union Movement was campaigning for European unity, and a decent standard of living.

In 1961 John Bean's British National Party stood two candidates in neighbouring Deptford, Alan Charman and John Stanton. Their election address accused the prospective MP Leslie Plummer of: "coming down solidly on the side of coloured spivs and their vice dens as opposed to the white people of Deptford." Plummer had presided over the disastrous groundnut scheme in East Africa in the late 1940s. And he introduced a Racial Discrimination Bill in 1957 which was talked out by the Tory MP Robert Bell. Plummer sued for libel and was awarded £2,000, which was a lot of money in 1961 when the average weekly wage was only £14.00, but fortunately for the BNP he died before he could collect the money.

The West Indian population of Lewisham grew steadily, and on Saturday 13th August 1977 the National Front marched from New Cross to Lewisham town centre. Their 500 marchers were 'protected' from 4,000 anti-fascists by 5,000 policemen using riot shields for the first time in mainland Britain. 111 people were injured and there were 214 arrests.

Today, the Lewisham-Deptford constituency is 46% black and ethnic minority by origin. The New Cross area is plagued by violent crime but in Blackheath the average house price is £492,407. Gentrification has turned it into an up and coming area that is represented by Labour MP Vicky Foxcroft.

Union Movement, Lewisham Branch, Parr Road, Sydenham SE26, 5 May 1952.

Dear Mrs Bland, Mr Etter, who is one of our most active workers, has handed your letter to me for an answer.

It is indeed good to know that there are people like yourself who are at least prepared to give us a hearing. It is a point of interest that you are the sixth in the last two weeks who have written requesting information about our movement.

Briefly set out on this notepaper are our aims and objectives. But, of course, they are very much dear to our policy. We are a movement as distinct from the political parties.

We are not a popular movement. People who join us are subject to all sorts of insults and abuse. Although the public often change in their attitude towards us, insofar as they are now prepared to give us a ring.

We tell you this because the people who join us need courage and stamina, and from the tone of your letter you are not lacking in that.

Young Cordray is our local youth leader and he has won the admiration of us all for the courage that he has shown in giving a lead to many youths who are fed up to the teeth at the stagnation of the old political parties. As you may imagine he is the subject of all sorts from those who once were glad to have him.

We are dubbed ‘fascist’ by those who take no trouble to discuss policy, and it is true that many of us were fascists pre-war. Some of our members were imprisoned without charge and without trial for opposing a war that they said would lead Britain to disaster and bring us nearer to the dangers of Communism. Many men fought and died in a war they knew was wrong. It is recorded that the first two to die in the last war were members of British Union, they were Flying Officers Day and Brooking who were shot down in a raid that was fought at Dunkirk, the first of many actions by former members of British Union. There are many instances I could give of fascists who died in what they knew to be a war for Jewish finance; those jackals of Judah who determine much of the political and academic life of our country.

Today, we of British Union join hands with the disillusioned youth who are daily coming into our movement. We elder members encourage them to lead for we know that the youth of today will be the statesmen of tomorrow. Statesmen and new politicians are needed to lead us to a new and higher standard of life in the new Europe that is to be. We want British youth to take the lead. They lead in the battle for the idea of Europe. Let them now lead in the reconstruction of a new Empire. An Empire that will be independent of America or Russia.

We believe that force can only be met by greater force. And that force can be built up by a United Europe with a common economy based upon the wealth of a greater opportunity, not by domination and licence but by real co-operation. We will put resources at their disposal that will develop Europe, bringing Britons to a state where we will not have to go to America for a few measly dollars.

Britain, not America, not Russia, will lead in the struggle that must inevitably come.

I have tried briefly to give you some idea of what we stand for. I have not, and will not give you the whole picture. We promise nothing but hard work and sacrifice. But in the end a goal that the old parties cannot even dream of. We will build a new world that if not we then our children will enjoy.

Meetings are held Saturday at 3.30 at Ringstead Road, Catford. I am usually there myself, as is Etter and young Philip Cordray.

We are very happy to have you and your husband as members of our movement and any younger members of your family as members of our unit.

If you cannot get along to our Catford meetings I would be happy to call on you one evening to explain further our policy.

Yours in Union. P Dunigan

Father Edward Cahill 1932

Patriotism the Foundation of True Internationalism

Just as one's natural attachment to own's own family traditions and one's own immediate relatives are the foundation which Nature has supplied for sympathy and benevolence towards one's fellow citizens, so, too, the citizens of each nation, in order to attain to true cosmopolitan virtues and well-ordered zeal for the good of the race, must have as the foundation of these virtues that love and devotion to his own country which the law of nature and right-ordered charity demand. True charity and true piety must begin at home.

In the same way the higher and more perfect culture of a people, if it be real perfection and not a degradation or deterioration, must develop along the lines of the national characteristics and traditions. A declassed man or woman who, owing to worldly training or a false ambition for social advancement, has come to disregard or despise his or her own immediate family, forfeits the respect of right-thinking men; and from such a one nothing great or generous may be hoped. The same applies substantially to the more or less degraded citizen, who has lost or never possessed the love and appreciation of the nation to which he belongs, and to which he is bound by the closest natural ties. It is in this sense that Chateaubriand, the Catholic apologist and historian writes:

"We doubt whether it is possible for a man to possess any real virtue, any real talent or ability, without love of country".

Special Importance of the National Language

The native language and literature of a country are usually bound up very intimately with the whole national spirit, and with almost every aspect of the national life. This is especially true of a literary language like Greek or Irish which contains the native history, the national laws and institutions, and enshrines the traditional ideas and aspirations of the people. In such a case, at least, the preservation of the native language may be regarded as essential for the continued existence of the historic nation itself. The truth of Davis's oft-quoted words cannot be seriously questioned:

"A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and more important frontier than fortress or river."

Devotion to all Civic Duties

It would be a mistake, however, to suppose that the virtue of patriotism can appear only in its war paint, or is confined to the duty of defending or regaining the freedom of one's country. or saving the nation from extinction. A person manifestly owes many other services to his country, which though more ordinary and commonplace, are, at least, in normal circumstances, more practical, and sometimes little less heroic. The spiritual, intellectual and material interests of the nation need the services of each of its members. The object of the civil union with which patriotism is so closely connected, is to assist the members each and all towards the highest development of their faculties, moral, intellectual and physical. Hence, the patriot will do his part to procure for the country the benefit of good laws, to check the spread of vice, above all, to secure that the most worthy are chosen for the public offices; in a word, all the duties already referred to under the heading of Legal and Distributive Justice are also included in those of Patriotism.

True Patriotism Unselfish

In connection with the services of Patriotism, we shall conclude with one remark. The true patriot serves his country as the dutiful and affectionate son shows kindness to his parents, from motives not of interest but of love. Hence, he will not seek or expect payment or reward save the consciousness of having done his duty; for the proposition may be accepted as substantially true that the man who demands gratitude from his country as his due, rarely gets it, and still more rarely deserves it.

Russia and America

1945 marked the end of the Second World War and the start of the Cold War which lasted until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Over forty years of hostility that brought the world to the brink of nuclear disaster and initiated an arms race that bankrupted the Soviet Union and spread American bases around the world. The Red Army occupied half of Europe and supported revolutions throughout Asia and Africa, but to the emerging nations the Soviets were allies in the fight against colonialism.

Now, communism is finished and the new Russian Federation is a parliamentary democracy with a free market economy, but the West remains distrustful and President Vladimir Putin is still tarnished with the sins of the old regime.

The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world with a population of 146.7 million, and a GDP of $1,657 trillion. The close proximity of Russian gas and oil to German industry will prove to be an irresistible attraction. Despite American sanctions it is inevitable that Russia will gravitate towards Europe, but we have nothing to fear from an historic nation that has contributed in full to every branch or art and science.

We have lost hundreds of British soldiers supporting American foreign policy in Afghanistan and the Middle East. The leaders of what President Eisenhower called the military-industrial complex think they have a right to rule the world. They have no interest in the ancient cultures and nations of mankind. They believe only in unrestricted capitalism enforced by economic, or actual, warfare.

But the ties of blood, culture and history between Europe and America cannot be broken. We have friends and relations across the Atlantic and we look forward to the day when the American people throw out the criminals in Washington and rejoin Europe and Russia as guardians of civilization. The mass importation of cheap labour is happening all over the world. As discontent spreads the political reaction to this capitalist racket will bring down those regimes that thrive on war and exploitation.

Three Kinds of Identity - Alexander Dugin

In order to clarify the Forth Political Theory let us delve into the problem of identity. We propose a methodological schema. We can represent the identity of a certain society or community as having three dimensions.

Diffused Identity. This is a vague feeling of a common belonging to a certain whole that is proper to every member of a given society. It is somehow confused, uncertain, unconscious and weak. It can be activated only in an extreme situation such as wars, revolutions, natural disasters, and so on. Diffused identity doesn't make a direct impact on political or ideological decisions or choices. People with the same diffused identity can freely chose quite different methods, values, solutions, and strategies, can belong to different and concurrent parties, can share different positions on concrete issues, and so on. Such identity is weak, unconscious, and in times of peace almost nonexistent, because it doesn't affect the person in his everyday life.

Extreme Identity. This is an arbitrary and artificial creation of some rational formula that pretends to express and manifest the diffused identity in the intellectual realm. Here the identity becomes an ideology, a conceptual framework, or a theory. An example of such an identity is nationalism. But there can be other types such as social or class identities, liberal cosmopolite identity, and so on. It tries to convince the bearers of diffused identity that this represents their essence. It is not so popular in times of peace and prosperity but usually gains popularity in periods of wars and troubles. Extreme identity is often a perverted, disfigured, and exotic creation that contrasts with the diffused identity, emphasizing certain features and neglecting others. Extreme identity is often the caricature of diffused identity. This identity is much clearer and conscious and influences formal decisions, allegiances, solutions, and options for the people who accept it and cultivate it.

Deep Identity. The third type of identity is the privileged one in the Forth Political Theory. Deep identity is an organic, existential, basic identity that lies below diffused identity, giving to its content meaning and structure. It is a kind of language identity giving it its content, meaning and structure. It is a kind of language (in the structuralist context of Ferdinand de Saussure) that contains all kinds of possible discourses. It is not a superstructure that is constructed above diffused identity (as extreme identity) but an infrastructure that is beneath diffused identity, giving it reality, sense and inner harmony. Deep identity is what causes a people to be what it is. It is the essence of the people, something that transcends the collectivity in its actual state. This is transcendence: people being simultaneously imminent and present in every other person that belongs to the same people. The people is not what exists at the present time. Its language, culture, tradition, gestures and psychological features don't appear in the present, they come from the past and move toward the future through the present moment. An actually existing people is not a people as such but only a particular moment of it, and only a segment of it. The people includes those who are dead and those of its children who have yet to be born. It is a kind of music that can be perceived as such only if we remember the previous note and anticipate the next one. The deep identity is the whole that plays out in time and space. Deep identity is people as existence.

The Forth Political Theory is dealing with people as existence and therefore the question of the deep identity  of each people is of primordial importance.

The Tower Block Fire

Theresa May's barely managing regime has been rocked by terrorist attacks and a disappointing election. Now she faces the consequences of the Grenfell Tower disaster. An inquiry will establish the facts but existing regulations must be enforced.
She is right to get involved but wrong to pardon sub-letting and illegal immigration; her duty is to uphold the law.

What is to be Done? - by Eddy Morrison

I'm reluctantly entering my 50th year as an active white nationalist.

In 1978 when I was a National Front organiser I firmly believed that we would have our first members of parliament by 1980. We didn't and the period known as the 'horrible 80s' was upon us. Split after split with eventually a by-election where one schism of the National Front stood a candidate at the same time as another schism of that splintered wreck of a once mighty movement.

The 1990s got a bit more interesting and we achieved the election of a BNP candidate in London. Things were slow in the BNP but it was, under John Tyndall, going in the right direction. As BNP Yorkshire Organiser I was gladdened to see many old comrades returning to the BNP. Then in 1999 the British National equivalent of the Twin Towers occurred - Nick Griffin became the leader of the BNP.

He spent the next ten years building it up. BNP councillors were everywhere and two MEPs were elected. Then came the second calamity! Griffin's appearance on a major national TV show. Griffin acted like a buffoon. He even sidled up to the Black 'celebrity' who was sat next to him. Be bungled his way through a barrage of outrageous Lefty opposition and made no attempt to either push himself into prominence in a public forum watched live by millions nor to say anything cohesive. He acted like the local village idiot. Was it an Act?

Now we find ourselves in the 2010s. A large number of nationalist grouplets vying for members of an ever dwindling pool of recruits. With the break up of the EDL and the BNP one would have expected a huge rush to join an existing nationalist party. It never happened. The British Democratic Party seems to be totally static and the National Front is a shadow of its former self. The less said about 'Britain First' and the lunatic New British Union, the better!

Unity talks abound. Unity with who and why unity at all? It's like putting all the hospital patients with transmittable diseases in a ward of basically healthy people. Unity serves one purpose - it gives a platform for people who like to talk about nationalist unity who can go on home and do little more than look forward to the next unity meeting ad infinitum.

It's never going to happen folks - believe me! We need, as we did in the 1960s, a fresh start. We need a White Nationalist movement that is no holds barred. We need one that rejects the inevitable compromises that come with unity. We need a movement that rejects both internal and external democracy and runs on the meritocratic principle.

You join, you work hard and you get the benefits. You join, you gripe about provocative tactics and you should for the good of all rush off and join Ukip (if it's still there of course).

A new movement (I can feel the shuddering from here) it must be. And for the first few years of its life it should avoid elections like the plague. It shouldn't even be registered with the ZOG control apparatus called 'The Electoral Commission." Give them your membership numbers; state of finances; sign forms that bind you to a Liberal Stalinist state and for what? To get seven votes in a council election (Nick Walsh - Hull 2016).

A new movement must be uncompromising in its White Nationalist principles and uncompromising in its drive for power. What we need comrades is a movement of disciplined fanatics!

European Outlook Comment

Movements like the National Front are dedicated to stopping immigration and getting Britain out of the EU. The second objective appears to be imminent but the first is not. We have a desperate housing shortage, and a growing division between rich and poor. This is no time to give up the struggle. but it's time to face facts. Minority parties can succeed but the days of petty nationalism and street theatre are over.

Europe and the Celtic Fringe - Geoffrey Vernon (Jeffrey Hamm) from Lodestar 1986

Two minority yet powerful voices are striving to make themselves heard above the loud demands of the Establishment to maintain the status quo in which little national states pay lip-service to European unity, while resisting any threat to their national sovereignty and what they conceive to be their national interests.

What are these voices of the not-so-silent minority? One calls for complete European union and integration, while the other stridently asserts that the right of 'ethnic minorities' have been seriously eroded by the creation of national states, and would suffer further indignities if power were transferred from the existing national parliaments to a more remote European bureaucracy.

Are these views contradictory, or is it possible to find a synthesis between the existing thesis of national states and the apparent antithesis of Europeanism? Let us attempt to answer that question by examining the case presented by Europe's 'ethnic minorities', Celtic in origin, so that linguistically as well as geographically they may be considered to be Europe's 'Celtic fringe'.

I was pleasantly reminded that reports of the death of the Celtic peoples of Europe are grossly exaggerated when on 13 April of this year I attended 'Scrif-Celt' - "A Conference and Exhibition on Contemporary Writing and Publishing in the Celtic Languages" at the London Welsh Centre in London's Gray's Inn Road, organised by the London branch of the Celtic League.

Six countries were represented at the conference, entitled as follows in their respective Celtic languages, with the more familiar English names in parentheses: Alba (Scotland), Breizh (Brittany), Cymru (Wales), Eire (Ireland), Kernow (Cornwall), and Mannin (Isle of Man).

"How many divisions has the Pope?" asked Stalin, and a similar question might be derisively addressed to the defenders of the Celtic languages so heavily outnumbered in Europe as a whole , and even within their own borders. It is estimated that that something like 3,500,000 people speak one or other of the above six languages. Of the 16,500,000 people living in Celtic countries only 2,500,000 are Celtic speaking: the other million speakers of Celtic are scattered across the world, often victims of the 'Celtic diaspora' arising from the economic neglect of their native lands and regions. Collectively the Celtic speakers present a formidable force, but individually they are often woefully weak, as the following analysis reveals.

According to the 1981 United Kingdom language census only 79,307 people (1.6 per cent of the Scottish population) spoke Gaidhlig, the Scottish Gaelic. It is estimated that 700,000 people within Brittany speak Brezonek (Breton), but there are substantial Breton-speaking communities in Paris, Le Mans, Quebec and the United States, adding at least 100,000 to the above figure. The above census recorded 503,549 Welsh-speaking people within Wales, or 18.9 per cent of the Welsh population, with 21,283 speaking no English. And what of the Welsh 'exiles'? There are an estimated 35,000 Welsh-speakers in London, 7,500 in Patagonia, and substantial numbers in the United States. The census recorded 1,018,312 people (31.6 per cent of the population speaking Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic) in the 26 counties of Eire. The governments of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland have refused to take a census of Gaelic-speakers in the Six Counties of Northern Ireland but these are estimated at 60,000, to whom should be added some 100,000 in England, Wales and Scotland, with substantial numbers scattered throughout the world.

These are thriving languages which have never died, but we complete our analysis with the old languages of Cornwall and the Isle of Man, in a much less healthy state. Kernewek (Cornish) died as a generally spoken language in the late 18th century, although some knowledge of it survived until the late 19th century, when enthusiasts began the current language revival, and by 1981, 875 people were recorded as having some fluency in the language. In the Isle of Man a 1971 census recorded only 284 speakers of Gaelg (Manx) on the island.

Are the interests of these small 'ethnic minorities' diametrically opposed to those of the great powers, or to those who would advance beyond the perhaps too narrow nationalism to European unity, or to a world state whose people spoke some universal language? And are not their complaints trivial in a world wrestling with the problems of peace or nuclear war and of hunger on a gigantic and terrifying scale? Our editorial suggests that Britain's future depends upon her active support for the creation of a united Europe with a central government for its defence and the leadership of its economy. But it goes on to advocate two further tiers of government: national and regional. The latter (or the last of the three tiers) should give maximum support and encouragement to the preservation of these ancient Celtic languages and cultures - and of others. (Would not the system reduce the tension within Belgium between Walloons and Flemish, or between the Basques and the central government of Spain?) Could it not play its part in solving the Irish problem, reassuring Catholics and Protestants, Gaelic-speakers and English, Republicans and Unionists, that their respective interests would be protected and safeguarded by a strong European government, on which they would both be represented.

The advocates of European unity rightly pay tribute to our 2,000 year-old Roman civilisation, and to the 1,000 years of Greek culture which preceded it. But the Celts were part of both those civilisations and were the first Transalpine people to emerge into recorded history. Earliest Celtic written remains are now dated as belonging to the 5th century BC, and the Celtic languages have continued to contribute to European literature, in the heroic legends of mythology, poetry and drama, philosophy and law. The prophet is not always without honour in his own country, although he does not obtain universal esteem until his writings are translated into more widely read languages. How many theatre-goers who enjoyed Brendan Behan's 'The Hostage' were aware that it had originally been written in Gaelic as 'An Giall' and performed in Dublin as early as 1956? Similarly, his play 'The Quare Fellow' was written as 'Casadh Sugain Eile' (The Twisting Rope). Let Europe unite, bur always remember its Celtic fringe, encouraging its books, and plays to pour from its presses, in the original and in translation.

Eurasian Mission - Alexander Dugin

Alexander Dugin - photo by Counter Currents

This book gives an overview of Neo-Eurasianism and the Fourth Political Theory. Alexander Dugin is a Russian political scientist who is banned by America for supporting the return of Crimea. They have branded him a dangerous radical but he regards himself as a conservative:

"We conservatives want a strong, solid state, with order and healthy families, positive values, the reinforcing of the importance of religion and the Church in society. We want patriotic radio, patriotic experts, patriotic clubs. We want the media that expresses national interests."

He rejects Communism, Fascism and Liberalism and
proposes a global system with the Americas under the direction of the United States, Europe-Africa under the European Union, the Russian-Central Asian zone, and the Pacific zone under China and Japan. He opposes the New World Order which seeks to impose American values on the whole world:

"Americans have a very specific conception of progress. They believe in the unlimited growth potential of their economic system and are confident about the future, which from their point of view should be "American." Most of them sincerely believe an expansion of the "American way of life" to all humanity to be a real boon and goal, and are perplexed when faced with rejection and an entirely different, negative reaction (especially when the spread of this lifestyle is accompanied by a military invasion and mass extermination of the local population, the violent uprooting of traditional and religious customs, and other delights of direct occupation). What Americans call "progress" - the "democratization," "development" and "civilizing" of the rest of the world is in fact a degradation, colonisation, degeneration, degeneracy, and paradoxically a peculiar form of liberal dictatorship. It is no exaggeration to say that the United States is a stronghold of militant liberalism, a visible embodiment and progenitor of all the evil that plagues humanity today, and a powerful mechanism that steadily leads humanity towards the final catastrophe. This is the empire of absolute evil. The hostages and victims of the disastrous course of this empire are not only all the other nations , but also ordinary Americans, who are no different from the rest of the conquered, fleece, deprived and persecuted peoples of the Earth. They too are the slaughter of nations."

Supporters of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson should avoid this book but the rest of us will appreciate it.

Infiltration

The huge Action Francaise demonstration in Paris of 1934 brought down the 'Cartel des Gauches' government and so frightened the Communists that they disbanded and joined
the Socialist Party. The Reds in Britain have adopted the same tactics. Instead of standing under their own colours they have infiltrated the Labour Party and installed Jeremy Corbyn as leader. If we want to influence events we should follow their example.

Harold Soref (1916 - 1993) was a standard bearer at the great BUF Olympia rally of 1934. He served in the Royal Scots during the war and joined the Conservative Party in the fifties. He was a leading member of the Monday Club and an outspoken supporter of Rhodesia. In 1972 he addressed a packed Monday Club rally at Westminster Central Hall. The IRA tried to assassinate him in 1974 but they killed the wrong man. He served as MP for Ormskirk, Lancashire 1970-1974. He might have joined Union Movement and spent his time leaflet bashing or selling 'Action' but he probably had more influence as a Tory MP.

We should emulate Harold Soref and join one of the established parties. They are all looking for candidates and even backbench MPs have some influence. They are always on TV voicing their opinions but few street activists are ever
given the opportunity.

Some people are so frustrated by lack or representation that they deface their ballot papers with inappropriate symbols and slogans. That's understandable but it would be more productive of them to join one of the established parties.
They might not convert the party faithful but they could at least try.

And The Weak Suffer What They Must

Yanis Varoufakis was the Greek finance minister who negotiated with the EU in 2015. Despite everything he still supports the EU but he demands structural reforms. In his book "And The Weak Suffer What They Must" he explains how Europe was nearly brought down by the financial crash of 2008, and he demolishes the "Daily Telegraph" argument for low interest rates:

"Once a crisis proves so large  that everyone is trying, against all hope, to pay off debt in conditions of shrinking income, no one want to borrow even if interest rates come down to zero. At that point central banks run out of means to stimulate the economy in their usual way - by reducing interest rates. Zero is indeed a radical number and any interest rate below it means that depositor who must now pay for the banks to hold their money, will rush to withdraw every penny, causing the banking sectors collapse.

He proposes measures to alleviate unsustainable debt (the UK's National Debt now stands at £1.7 trillion) and he describes his treatment at the hands of the "Troika."

"My use of the term fiscal waterboarding back in 2010 was, after I became finance minister in 2015, used as evidence that I was a provocateur. In fact it was a perfectly apt and reasonable term by which to describe the troika's practices in Athens and elsewhere. What does waterboarding involve? You take a subject, lay him on his back and engulf his head in water so that he suffocates. Just before he dies, you stop, you allow the subject to take a few agonising breaths, and then you start again. You repeat until he confesses."

Varoufakis traces the origin of the EU to the 1940s:

"Above and beyond the concept of the nation state, the idea of a new community will transform the living space given us all by history into a new spiritual realm. . . The new Europe of solidarity and cooperation among all its peoples, a Europe without unemployment, without monetary crisis...will find an assured foundation and rapidly increasing prosperity once national economic barriers are removed." Arthur Seyss-Inquart.

"The people of Europe understand increasingly that the great issues dividing us, when compared to those which will emerge and will be resolved between continents are nothing but trivial family feuds...I am convinced that in fifty years Europeans will not be thinking in terms of separate countries." Joseph Goebbels.
